APPEARANCES AND EVENTS

June 8--SCBWI is sponsoring a critique nic from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. This event is free and open to all children's writers and their families. You don't have to be an SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) member
to attend. Join us and network with other writers in the Utah County area. Those outside the county are also welcome.

What is a critique nic? It's a writer's working picnic. SCBWI will provide punch and cookies. Bring your own lunch and five copies of a manuscript, double spaced, no more than five pages long. There will be a brief presentation on the benefits of SCBWI membership, then we will break into groups by genre and critique each others manuscripts. Don't be shy.

Vivian Park is located in Provo Canyon. Go 5.6 miles east (up
the canyon) from the stoplight on University Avenue at 800 North (Orem). Vivian Park is on the right and well marked. SCBWI will be in Pavilion #2. The park has a covered pavilion for 80, water, electricity, a grill, a playground, and brand new restrooms. It is located next to the scenic Provo River. We ask that if you bring young children, you bring a responsible person with you to keep them from falling into the river.

We want to bring enough punch and cookies, so please send a
non binding RSVP to Chris Minch's email: pyritelily@hotmail.com. Put "critique nic" in the subject line and tell me in the body of the message how many are in your party.

June 11--Rick Walton will be reading his books during storytime at the Orem Library, from 10:30-11:00 am.

June 13--Mike Tunnell, Ron Woods, Laurel Brady, Dean Hughes, Carol Lynch Williams, John Ritter, in an evening with Young Adult writers, at the Read Leaf Bookstore in Springville.

July 15-18--BYU Writing for Young Readers Workshop. A four-day workshop for aspiring writers on the art of publishing books for children and teenagers. Guest faculty include writers Tim Wynne-Jones, John H. Ritter, Alane Ferguson, Lael Littke, Eve Bunting, Tony Johnston, Laura Torres, Gloria Skurzynski; editors Karen Wojtyla (Knopf) and Tracy Gates (Viking); and agent Kendra Marcus.
For more information go to http://ce.byu.edu/cw/writing.

July 19-20--BYU Books for Young Readers Symposium. A two-day symposium for librarians, teachers, and parents. Presenters include Cynthia DeFelice, Kimberly Willis Holt, Eric Kimmel, Karla Kuskin, Jerry Stanley, and Ed Young. For more information go to http://ce.byu.edu/cw/childlit/index.htm.

August 10--The Dream Maker's Writer's Conference. Our own Alane Ferguson is organizing a great writer's conference this summer in Elizabeth, Colorado. Not only is this a great opportunity to learn the craft of writing for children and to make connections, but it's also all for a good cause. Every penny raised by the conference will go to help keep the Elizabeth High School Marching Band alive and making music.

The Dream Makers Writer's Conference will be held Saturday, August 10th. Faculty includes Nancy Mercado, editor at Penguin Putnam, New York agent George Nicholson of Sterling Lord Literistic, Award winning authors Claudia Mills, Gloria Skurzynski, Carol Lynch Williams, and Alane Ferguson. Mark McVea from HarperCollins has also tentatively agreed to participate.

Each participant will be able to select three 90 minute classes, and CD's will be available for all classes. There will be a writing contest that can be entered for a separate fee of $25.00, with the categories of Best Picture Book, Best Middle Grade, and Best Young Adult. (The lunch will be part of the $65.00 fee.) Winners will be announced at the luncheon, and each winner will receive a consultation with an editor or agent!

Registration will begin on June 10th. The fee will increase to $75.00 August 1st, and class sizes will be limited.

The Elizabeth High Marching Band will perform during the lunch and serve a dessert to all participants. A website should be up and running in time for registration, and the participants will be able to download a registration form, choose their classes, and then send in their form and fee. A map to Elizabeth, as well as hotels where we hope to get cheap group rates (we will know by June 10th) will be included on the site.

Although the actual names of the classes haven't been set, we will offer lectures on writing picture books, middle grade novels, non fiction, science fiction, young adult novels, mysteries, how to write a series, the business of writing, and what agents/editors are looking for.

More information later.

August 13--Rick Walton will be reading his books during storytime at the Orem Library, from 10:30-11:00 am.
