Ron WoodsSix of my first seven books were non-fiction, self-help books about marriage and parenting. The seventh was a life-planning and goal-setting book for teens. These were all published by Utah publishers (Deseret, Bookcraft, Horizon) in a five-year blitz period in the late 80s. Before starting any of these books, I had begun a young adult novel, set in my Idaho hometown. When the book wasn’t immediately accepted, it got shunted aside while I did the other books. It took many years to get back to the novel and to get it in shape to be published. I had a lot of encouragement from Tracy Gates, a New York editor who had seen the early draft. After 18 years, from start to finish, THE HERO was finally published by Alfred A. Knopf/Random House in March 2002. It was an exciting and satisfying culmination to a story I like a lot--a story about a youth who commits a purposeful breach of conventional morality for a higher good, and is willing to sacrifice his straight-arrow reputation for someone he loves. THE HERO has been listed on several “young adult favorites” lists. I’ve since submitted another young adult manuscript, now under review, and have more in the creative pipeline.
